SUMMARY
The agriculture and therefore the soil have played a key role in the history.
It has been proved that Agriculture started almost simultaneously in different
regions and from these, the Mediterranean middle east, also called the Fertile Crescent,
is the most interesting to us as its climatic and soil characteristics are similar to the
Spanish ones.
This Fertile Crescent is the land of origin for many cultivated plants, wheat,
barley, beans, lentils and others, which satisfied man needs.
These crops reached Spain after a four thousands kilometres journey, years before the
arrival of the trading societies Phoenicians, Greeks, with their new phytogenetic
resources.
Later on Rome established a new order. Being an imperial power it aimed to
obtain the maximum benefit for the Metropolis and with this purpose it settled down on
the most fertile lands, Itálica, Hispalis, Mérida, Cartago Nova.
With relation to the current geographic significance, several cases representa-
tive of the influence of the soil will be explained.
Strawberries crop, where Spain keeps a leader position in the European market.
The tobacco crop successfully adapted to our condition in spite of being a tropi-
cal crop.
Finally, the wine D.O. closely relates to the soil characteristics.
