Geology, Hydrogeology and protection of Cervantes Spa in Santa Cruz

                                        de Mudela (Ciudad Real)

Cervantes spa is situated, geologically, in the south east of Centro-Iberia Massif,
and near it there are several mountains, the Acebuche and the Águila, of preferent
direction North West-South East and West-East, in wich one can find a large
amount of slates, quarzites and sandstones, very some volcanites and limestones,
all of them from paleozoic age, separated by depressions filled with sediments
made by sands and clays.

The acuifer by the main well of the spa, named Bilbao, its associated to a quartz
formation, sometimes affected by fissures and fractures of preferred direction SSW
– NNE, inside the ordovicis slates, exploted in the antimony old mines.

Its waters proceding from the water filtration from the rain in the mentioned
paleozoic and terciary outcrops, they‘re acid, very mineralized and with high con-
teins of carbonic anhidrid originally endogenous, increasing through the brekage
and fissures related to the volcanic activity of the area.

The carbonic waters of the spa wells, denominated Bilbao and Villa Rosa, are
protected in quantity and quality by a mining perimeter protection of 2.308 hec-
tares.

narias (Fig. 1).
