ABSTRACT

Origin
of
the
Department
of
Biochemistry
and
Molecular
Biology
of
the

University
of
Salamanca

Created the Chair of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of
Salamanca (Spain) in 1968, it was adscript as a Department to its Biological
Section (soon transformed in Faculty of Biology). Structural and Metabolic
Biochemistry were obligatory matters, and Molecular Biology as optative, in the
studies. When the Faculty of Pharmacy was created in this University, in 1971,
Biochemistry and Special Biochemistry (obligatory) and Clinical Biochemistry
(as a optative) were the matters teached at the Faculty of Pharmacy by the
"Interfacultative Department, Sciences and Pharmacy", constituted in 1975. In
1982, the Chair of Biochemistry was created at the Faculty of Pharmacy; and the
Interfacultative Department was divided. Finally, when the Chair of Biochemistry
of the Faculty of Medicine was separated from that of Phisiology, the former was
integrated with those of Biology and Pharmacy to constitute, in 1987, the present
Department. According to independent evaluations, the level of scientifical
research carried out, from the first time, by the Chairs of this Department is very
high.

ANTECEDENTES
HISTÓRICOS

El
pasado
11
de
septiembre
tuvo
lugar
en
la
Facultad
de
Farmacia
una
breve

ceremonia
con
motivo
de
cumplirse
el
25°
aniversario
de
la
constitución
del

Departamento
objeto
de
esta
revisión,
con
la
estructura
actual;
esto
es,
integrado

por
las
respectivas
cátedras
de
las
Facultades
de
Biología,
Farmacia
y
Medicina.
El

acto,
continuación
del
simposio
allí
presentado
brillantemente
el
día
anterior

sobre
las
líneas
principales
de
investigación
desarrolladas
por
ese
Departamento,

estuvo
presidido
por
el
Rector,
Prof.
Daniel
Hernández
Ruipérez,
y
contó
con
la

participación
de
la
Vicerrectora
de
Investigación,
Profª.
Mª
Ángeles
Serrano

(perteneciente
a
dicho
Centro),
y
la
de
los
Ex-­-Directores
del
mismo
(Profs.
Cabezas,

Medina,
Battaner
y
Villar),
así
como
la
del
actual
Director
y
organizador
de
tal

celebración,
Prof.
Emilio
Fernández.

Según
se
recoge
en
la
Memoria
de
actividades
de
la
Universidad
de

Salamanca,
ya
anteriormente
a
1987,
desde
el
curso
1970-­-71,
existió
oficialmente

un
“Departamento
de
Bioquímica”
correspondiente
a
la
cátedra
de
Bioquímica
de
la

Facultad
de
Ciencias
(dotada
sólo
dos
años
antes),
la
cual
estaba
ocupada,
en
virtud

de
concurso
de
traslado,
desde
el
24-­-IV-­-1969,
por
el
Prof.
que
suscribe.
Por
tanto,

es
éste
el
primer
y
más
antiguo
catedrático
estrictamente
de
Bioquímica
de
la

Universidad
salmantina.
Es
sabido
que,
con
anterioridad,
existieron
numerosos
