Although a variety of P1 and P2 receptors are known to mediate nociceptive transmission, recent findings on novel P2X3 receptor supramolecular complexes and locations as well as on the role adenosine A3 receptors in pain pathways are opening new avenues for the development of more effective and safer analgesics.
